Dana Leong is half Japanese and half Chinese. Born in 1980, he was raised in the West Coast of the US in the San Francisco Bay area and has spent the last 15 years in New York. He studied both classical cello and jazz trombone on double scholarships at Manhattan School of Music.
Electro-jazz cellist/composer Dana Leong fuses hip-hop, jazz and electronics to create a signature boundless sound. Often referred to as a "hi-def Yo-Yo Ma", Dana has revolutionized the cello with his cutting edge amplification, lyrical melodies, and collage of jazz textures and improvisations. Whether as a performer, composer, collaborator, or recording producer, Dana's pioneering fusion of electronic music and ethereal jazz sensualities has garnered critical acclaim and wowed audiences worldwide.
Dana’s music spans across multiple genres. His distinctive sound is an emotionally mesmerizing combination of jazz, healing music, electronic dance and hip hop that appeals to large audience, not only a select few. He has taught jazz at Standford University from the age of 16. He won two Grammys in Latin Jazz with Paquito D’Rivera, worked with Ray Charles, Kanye West, Wynton Marsalis, Steve Coleman, Dave Douglas and many others. He composed for Belafonte’s album “Musicians Against Violence”. He heads the quartet "Milk & Jade" that recently completed a sold-out tour in Asia and the "Dana Leong Trio" known for the remixes of legendary artists such as Bjork or Maurice Ravel.
As a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and as a leading innovator at the intersection of music, technology and wellness, Dana feels that musical entertainment for its own sake is no longer quite enough and wants to become an active player in both the philanthropic and scientific world.
