Jonathan Crayford, born in 1964 in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, studied classical piano and learned jazz by ear. After leaving school, he worked in the film industry as a composer, winning several awards for his remarkable music.

During 20 years Jonathan lived and worked in New York, playing piano and recording with Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Murray, Groove Collective, David Binney and Brazilian singer Alda Rezende. After short stays in Spain and France, Jonathan returned to New Zealand where he currently lives.

Acclaimed as a highly innovative composer, he has also recorded more than ten albums as a leader, of which two recent solo piano CDs in Spain and a trio album in New York ("Dark Light", 2013) with Ben Street (bass) and Dan Weiss (drums). "Dark Light" is a stunning meditation in color and tone and leaves you gasping at its beauty, richness and assuredness. No one player is star here, nor across the whole album - it's team work all the way.

Influenced by Monk, Bill Evans, Ligeti ... Jonathan is perhaps New Zealand's most exciting export to the world of music: his style is exploratory, intuitive, thoughtful, soulful, melodic, subversive, delicate, dark "nearly funk within jazz", multi-dimensional!

Jonathan is currently scoring the soundtrack for the feature film "Pork Pie" - a remake of the classic, New Zealand hit "Goodbye Pork Pie". His live projects feature his solo work, the acoustic and electric trios and an ambitious new project, the Biggish Band, where Jonathan is joined by some of the most incredible NZ musicians.

A new album with Jonathan as leader and the Biggish Band is in production and scheduled for release early 2017.

"This is the kind of piano I totally relate to: exploratory, thoughtful, soulful, focused. Those qualities are all sort of contradictory, or at least contrasting, which is why this kind of work is meaningful: because it is multi-dimensional." - Jazz Time

"He’s an artist embedded so deeply within his music that his persona reflects in those terms.  It’s as if he were the embodiment of sonic shapes and forms." - John Fenton / JazzLocal32.com
