Ralph Peterson born in 1962 is an American jazz drummer and bandleader.
Everybody in his family was into music and they always had drums in the house: he began on percussion at age three! He was accepted into Rutgers University’s Jazz Studies program as a trumpeter after failing the percussion audition and graduated in 1984.
In 1983, when he was still a student, he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as the second drummer playing with him for several years.
Peterson’s prolific recording career started in 1985 with the fabled Blue Note label. He also worked as a sideman or as a leader with Terence Blanchard, Tom Harrell, Branford Marsalis, David Murray, Roy Hargrove, Dewey Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Charles Lloyd, Steve Coleman, Betty Carter and Uri Caine.
He is also proud of being a teacher since 28 years notably at Berklee College of Music … and to have completed his second decade of “drink and drug-free”!
He has released six recordings under his own label Onyx starting with ‘Outer Reaches’ (2010) and finishing with ‘Dream Deffered” (2016).
‘Dream Deffered’ is also the first CD to feature his new quintet with Kenny Davis (bass), Mark Whitfield (guitar), Gary Thomas (sax & flute) and Vijay Iyer (piano). It tries to capture some of the angst and hope that gave African American artists so much energy and excitement.
Ralph has released 2 CD’s in 2016:
- « Triangular III » in April
- « Dream Deferred » in November
Ralph appears on the December issue Cover of Modern Drummer Magazine and is a feature story in Drumhead Magazine.
