Grammy-nominated guitarist, composer and arranger Tom Guarna began his musical career at age 15 demonstrating rapidly an amazing ability to play and compose. After studying classical guitar and composition at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in 1986, he played music in New York local gigs and completed his education with John Abercrombie.
After working with several jazz bands, he joined Blood Sweat and Tears in 1995 and toured extensively with them for the next 3 years. Since then, he has forged his own voice as a modern jazz guitarist, performing with a wide range of artists including Chick Corea, Wallace Roney, Stanley Clarke, Mark Turner, Branford Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Greg Hutchinson, Fred Wesley, Mike Clark, Uri Caine, E.J. Strickland and Gary Bartz.
Since 2012, Tom Guarna led his own group throughout Europe and North America, and has been touring as a top sideman in several exciting groups led by Lenny White, E.J. Strickland, Wallace Roney or Manuel Valera (with a Latin Jazz Album of the year in 2013).
Tom Guarna has recorded seven CDs as composer and leader: Get Together (2005), Out from the Underground (2007), Wingspan (2008), Major Minor (2009), Bittersweet (2011), Rush (2014). In his new CD “Wishing Stones” that will be released in 2017, Tom leads an all-star personnel: with drummer Brian Blade, bassist John Patitucci and pianist Jon Cowherd.
Guarna incorporates many styles (jazz, funk, latin, soul, pop, R&B, world music) into his own blend of unique and engaging music, as he forges ahead within his forte: modern jazz with a touch of modern classical influence with a relentless drive.
Tom Guarna has been a featured sideman in groups lead by Lenny White, Stanley Clarke, Dr. Lonnie Smith and drummer Mike Clark.
Tom is currently a featured sideman in drummer E.J. Strickland's Transient Beings and percussionist Samuel Torres groups.

"Tom Guarna is a fantastic guitar player. A force to be reckoned with." - Chick Corea
"With each track, Tom reveals more and more about his own musicianship. He displays incredibledelicacy, fierce attack, longing melodic intonations and just why he chose these four musicians to accompany him on this album's journey." "His own space creation and vibrant virtuosity are the centerpiece of the group. Name any guitarist-Metheny, Frisell, Scofield-comparison falls far short or fails entirely because Tom Guarna is his own guitarist. With albums like 'Rush,' he can also belong to us." - JazzTimes, Music Life & Times
"An unequivocally modern record that focuses on both his compositional acumen and a broader textural palette . . . it's about time that the secret already known amongst musicians finally becomes public knowledge." - John Kelman / All About Jazz.com
"Guarna has been an audacious chopsmeister on the scene for the past ten years or more as both a valued sideman and a leader in his own right. On Rush, his sixth outing under his own name, the fretboard skills are as impressive as ever. And compositions like "Beringia," the evocative "Dreamland," the thoughtful "Forgiveness" and kinetic numbers like "Shambleau," "Movement and Repose" and the surging title track show that his writing-arranging skills have evolved considerably. With an all-star crew of saxophonist Joel Frahm, keyboardist Danny Grissett, bassist Orlando Le Fleming and drummer Johnathan Blake, Guarna has crafted his most fully-realized recording to date." - Bill Milkowski / DownBeat, Jazziz, Absolute Sound
"This cat can play anything and is one of those players that merit’s the tag ‘guitarist’s guitarist’. Never too hip for the room or precious for the sake of it, Guarna is on the money throughout taking jazz guitar into tomorrow. Well done." - Midwest Record
