Australian-born Kathleen Potton grew up in the small town of Tamworth known as the “Nashville of Australia”. At home, she lived with her parents eclectic musical tastes: her mother listened to classical music and swing-era jazz, while her father was a fan of classic rock and folk by the likes of The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.

Having studied classical piano and voice since childhood, she initially pursued a classical music degree in Sydney, before being granted a scholarship to study jazz at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore. It was here where she first really began writing her own music, documenting her travels and experiences through song.

“I wanted to try something new,” Potton explains. “I felt like I needed a bit of a shock to the system. And I’m really glad that I went. There are things that I got out of it that I wouldn’t have gotten from other places.”

Potton continued her travels & study, arriving on the thriving New York City jazz scene, where she earned a Master of Arts in Jazz Performance at Queens College and began performing both on stage and in the studio, collaborating with the new generation of brilliant jazz musicians, refining her sound and developing a vital understanding of harmony and groove.

No single genre defines Potton’s music: she draws inspiration from both enduring and contemporary recordings as well as poetry, art and every brief encounter and prolonged exchange that shape her arc of experiences. To date, her modest yet powerful body of work reflects a style that includes spontaneity, contemplation and craft - her compositions resonate with listeners and peers, alike.

"This lady’s music is so incredibly tasteful... her music gives life."
- J.Hoard (Grammy winning vocalist)

"Kathleen’s writing is as intuitive as it is imaginative, never shying away from complexity, nor relying upon it for interest. Her vocal performances on this record are graceful and understated, allowing the songs to speak for themselves without tricks or flash."
- Alan Hampton
