Born in Los Angeles in 1968, Jones' exposure to music was through his father who took him to gigs from age 5. The younger Jones spent the next few years working with acclaimed drummers (Al Tootie Heath, Billy Higgins) and performing with distinguished musicians. In 1991, Willie co-founded the jazz band Black Note and contributed as both musician and producer on all four Black Note recordings. By 1994, the band had toured Europe and across the U.S. and was the opening act for Wynton Marsalis.
Near the end of 1994, while Jones was reaching for a higher level of drumming dexterity, he played with Milt Jackson. From 1995 through 1998, he was a member of Arturo Sandoval's band and subsequently recorded with Horace Silver. Willie Jones III has also worked with Kurt Elling, Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock and Hank Jones and is considered as one of the world’s leading jazz drummers.
During 8 years (1998-2005), Jones was a member of Roy Hargrove's Quintet & RH Factor. After that, he decided to self-produce CDs that would express the music he likes. The common ground among his artists is that they love to play hardbop or straight-ahead, what Willie calls “real jazz”!
In 2000, Jones' released his first CD “Straight Swingin” and continued to reveal his proficiency as a composer as well as a producer on “Don't Knock The Swing”, “Volume III” (2007), “WE 2” (2008), “The Next Phase” (2010), “Plays the Max Roach Songbook” (2011). His latest CD release “Groundwork” (December 2015) is dedicated to the late Cedar Walton and other key musical influencers who passed in recent years.
Jones, who “never fails to assemble a strong crew” (NY Times) convenes living legends Buster Williams (bass), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), virtuosos Eric Reed (piano), Steve Davis (trombone), rising stars Warren Wolf (vibes) and Stacy Dillard (saxophones) for this special recording.
