Born in 1974, Yosuke Onuma started playing the guitar at the age of 14 under this father's influence. Today he is a leading jazz guitarist in Japan and performs regularly at the Tokyo Jazz Festival. With nine hit releases and live performances in such diverse places as Hong Kong, Indonesia, the United States and Italy, he is also becoming quickly known around the world. Recently his solo guitar arrangements were published in a book, "Hop Step Jazz", after appearing for four years as a magazine series.

In 2001 Yosuke Onuma came out with his debut album, "Nu Jazz", through Sony Music Japan. Then, after three groove jazz albums, he released his ground-breaking fourth album in 2004, "Three Primary Colors". It was recorded in New York as a trio with Richard Bona (bass) and Ari Hoenig (drums). In this highly acclaimed album, Onuma took up a style he still practices today: entirely abandoning the guitar pick and exclusively using finger-picking.

In 2007, drawing inspiration from another passion in his life - surfing - Onuma released "Beautiful Day". With this album, which has been called by some "jazz's answer to surf music", Onuma created a new and perfect union between guitar music and the sounds of the sea.

His seventh album, "Jam Ka" was recorded in 2010 in New York with Jacques Schwarz-Bart and Reggie Washington, backed up by Caribbean musicians. This CD offers a fresh sound arising from the fusion of creole music and groove jazz.

"GNJ" - which stands for Green Note Jazz - was nominated Album of the Year in 2014. "Green Note" is a term coined by Onuma himself, which combines the jazz term "blue note" - his roots - with the natural, organic sounds he has discovered and explored in recent years.

His upcoming album, "Jam Ka 2", which will expand on the concepts underlying "Jam Ka", was recorded in Paris in May 2016 and will be released in 2017.

With his captivating guitar sound that reaches way beyond the realm of jazz, his undisputedly solid technique and his charming personality, there is no doubt that Onuma will continue to amaze large audiences.

In May 2016 Yosuke recorded a new "Jam Ka" CD produced by saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart.

This CD features Yosuke on guitars, Olivier Juste on gwo-ka, Arnaud Dolmen on gwo-ka, drums and vocals, Gregory Privat on piano, Sonny Troupé on gwo-ka and Reggie Washington on bass.

Guest appearance : Simone Schwarz-Bart on poetry reading & Jacques Schwarz-Bart on acoustic guitar.

Stay tuned - the CD will be released in 2017.
